Once the interior walls of the newly colonized tree cavity have been smoothed out sufficiently, they are lined with propolis by the bees.

Like the buds of many other plants, the leaf buds of chestnuts provide the basic element for making the valuable, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal propolis – here the resinous plant secretion is clearly visible as a shiny coating on the bud.
